Posted: 13 November 2023

Monash University has been named Australia’s top research institution by The Australian in its annual list of the country’s top researchers and research institutions.

Of the 250 fields of academic endeavour identified by The Australian Research Magazine 2024 list, a Monash researcher was in first place in 32 of the fields, and Monash as a whole was the top research institution in 53 fields, an improvement on the 2023 edition in both areas.

Speaking to The Australian, Monash University Interim President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Susan Elliott AM credited many factors for Monash’s research success, including the decision to invest heavily in research infrastructure, as well as the move to build strength in medical research in the area of clinical research and clinical trials.

“Australian research is the lifeblood of our country’s economy and helps to address the most significant global challenges of our time, and the Monash research community is proud to be leading the charge. It’s vital that Australia’s research institutions continue to get appropriate access to the necessary funds and resources for this work to continue in the future,” said Professor Elliott.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Senior Vice-President Professor Rebekah Brown has overseen Monash University’s massive research footprint.

“Monash is home to many outstanding researchers across a wide range of fields and disciplines, we’re proud to work with our partners to solve global problems, create new technologies, and make discoveries for the betterment of people and the planet,” said Professor Brown.

“This is a fantastic and well deserved recognition of the contribution our researchers continue to make each year.”

This is the sixth year The Australian has compiled a list of the top 250 researchers and research institutions, using data based on the number of citations researchers have received for their publications over the past five years in top academic journals.

The list is accompanied by the publication’s Research Magazine 2024, which features Monash academics who are leaders in their fields.
