Monash University to lead $25 million mobile CT scanner development project

Posted:  8 July 2025

Monash University has stated it will “lead the design of a first-of-its-kind mobile CT scanner” with Micro-X as part of a $25 million development project.

The initiative is being supported by the US Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), with a contract valued at up to $25 million, to be delivered in partnership with Micro-X and Johns Hopkins University.

The design process will be led by Monash University’s Design Health Collab team. Project lead Dr Nyein Chan Aung highlighted the critical role of design in healthcare transformation, stating, “Through design, we are now driving this transformation, making full-body CT imaging truly mobile for the first time.” Professor Daphne Flynn, Director of Design Health Collab, said the project demonstrated Monash’s position in global healthcare innovation, with a focus on extending care delivery beyond hospitals to reach communities wherever they live.

The CT scanner is expected to be completed by 2029, with Monash University also seeking to implement similar design concepts within Australia to improve healthcare access and outcomes nationwide.
