Burnet Institute is a medical research and public health organisation that develops practical and innovative solutions to complex health issues that mostly affect disadvantaged, poor and vulnerable people. We do this by developing new treatments, vaccines and diagnostic tests, and implementing community-level prevention strategies for diseases such as HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, hepatitis, and sexually transmissible diseases. We focus on young people’s health, the health of women and children, and at risk population groups. Burnet is unique in Australia as the only organisation that is a medical research institute and a non-government organisation, and works locally, and internationally across the Asia and Pacific regions.
