The May budget is shaping as a crucial test of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s innovation credentials, with leading Australian scientists urging his government to move beyond slogans and invest in long-term research.
Under Tony Abbott’s leadership, the Coalition cut $400 million from research institutions in 2014, placing Australia’s research and development investment at its lowest point in 30 years. Many of the cuts remain in the budget’s forward estimates.
Mr Turnbull has made innovation and science a hallmark of his government through its National Innovation and Science Agenda (NISA), a $1.1 billion package that focuses on major research infrastructure and encourages the commercialisation of research.
