Monash University has announced the establishment of two new sub-faculties within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (MNHS), the Sub-Faculty of Health Sciences and the Sub-Faculty of Clinical and Molecular Medicine.

Professor Wayne Hodgson has been appointed as Dean of the Sub-Faculty of Health Sciences, and Professor Eric Morand has been appointed as Dean of the Sub-Faculty of Clinical and Molecular Medicine. Both positions were filled following an internal recruitment process and interviews conducted by a selection committee approved by University Council.

The Sub-Faculty of Health Sciences integrates the School of Primary and Allied Health Care, School of Rural Health, School of Nursing and Midwifery and the Medical Program. It will lead the research and development of new practices and models of care used by healthcare professions to improve community health outcomes and equity in service delivery across Australia, while strengthening alliances with professional bodies, teaching hospitals and health services across metropolitan Melbourne and regional and rural Victoria, and in partnership with our offshore campuses.

The Sub-Faculty of Clinical and Molecular Medicine will be embedded at Monash Health campuses and integrate the School of Clinical Sciences (SCS), Hudson Institute of Medical Research, Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation and Victorian Heart Institute. It will drive cutting-edge research across the continuum from discovery and clinical research, to implementation and health services research that enable direct access to patient populations through their campuses and community services, which will create world-leading outcomes that range from new treatments for patients to innovative commercialisation opportunities.

An internationally renowned toxinologist, Professor Hodgson joined Monash in 1988 as a tutor in the Department of Pharmacology and is currently Deputy Dean (Education) in the Faculty of MNHS, a role he has held since December 2011. He has published more than 185 papers including manuscripts in NaturePNAS and Molecular & Cellular Proteomics and is on the editorial board for ToxiconToxinsPLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases and Journal of Pharmacological and Toxicological Methods.

Professor Hodgson’s expertise and well-established international relationships and leadership within the Faculty of MNHS will enable him to continue advancing research and education excellence in Monash’s new Sub-Faculty of Health Sciences.

Recognised globally as an academic physician-scientist, Professor Morand joined Monash as a senior lecturer in 1996 and has been the Head of the SCS at Monash Health since 2011. In 2012, he was appointed Director of Rheumatology at Monash Health, which has since become the largest rheumatology service in Australia, with a reputation for clinical excellence, training and research. He has published more than 300 papers, reviews, book chapters and patents, and has received in excess of $40M in global research grants as Chief Investigator, including extensive National Health and Medical Research Council funding.

Professor Morand’s impressive leadership of the SCS places him in an ideal position to continue advancing research and education excellence in Monash’s new Sub-Faculty of Clinical and Molecular Medicine.
