Cell Bauhaus is leveraging virtual cell technology to accelerate the discovery of sustainable solutions to the worlds most pressing problems. We integrate mechanistic modelling and machine learning to build predictive cell models that enable rational design of interventions that give cells new and desired functionalities. Whether it’s gettingmicrobes to produce sustainable bio-molecules or reprogramming cells to respond to treatments – we are bringing rational engineering and design principals to biology to enable scalable solutions for planetary and human health.

Our work is part-funded by the Gates Foundation under the Accelerator whose goal is to conceive, design, test, and prepare the ecosystem for fundamentally novel platform technologies with breakthrough potential (grant number: INV-079292.)

Role

We are looking for a Computational Biologist to play a meaningful role in shaping our journey towards rational engineering and design for biology. In this role you will work with a team of engineers and scientists to develop our core platform that underpins the company technology and business strategy. As an early member of the team, you’ll have significant opportunities to shape the company’s software platform that will transform the way that we produce everything from food to fuel and facilitate our transition toward a sustainable future.

You will join a growing and friendly team of software engineers, ML researchers, and computational biologists.

What you will do

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of genome-scale metabolic models using flux balance analysis and dynamical models of intracellular biochemical pathways, using either continuous or stochastic simulations such as ODEs or SDEs / Gillespie-like simulation methods
  • Support the analysis of various omics datasets, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics
  • Contribute to the development of our Cell Engineering Platform, working with engineers to architect, build, and operate the platform’s components in a crossdisciplinary working environment
  • Utilise and enhance our database of biological knowledge
  • Learn from experienced team members while contributing fresh perspectives to our collaborative environment

Essential

  • Proven expertise in computational biology, mathematical biology, or related field with a PhD or equivalent industry experience
  • Strong programming or scientific computing experience using any mainstream programming languages – our stack is scientific Python on top of a Postgres database running on Kubernetes, with some Julia components
  • Familiarity with biological data including e.g. experimental design, data generation and quality control, and statistical analysis
  • Broad background in computational biology and modelling
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-disciplinary team

Nice to Have

  • Experience developing models of intracellular biochemical pathways
  • Exposure to stochastic processes
  • Basic knowledge of machine learning
  • Experience with Python and Julia

Inclusivity

We are building an inclusive environment where collaboration thrives, learning is shared, and diverse perspectives drive impactful outcomes. We are committed to equal opportunity employment, welcoming all backgrounds and identities. If you need accommodations, please let us know.

Hybrid Working

While we embrace flexible work arrangements, in-person collaboration is central to our culture of knowledge sharing and relationship building. For Melbourne-based roles, we follow a hybrid model where team members come into the office three days per week. This structure helps us maintain strong connections while still offering the benefits of remote work.
