To grow opportunities for medtech manufacturers to sell to health services, a new initiative, the Australian Medtech Manufacturing Alliance (AMMA), is forming to create a connected programme, led in Victoria and building on the work of the Australian Medtech Manufacturing Centre.
Under BioMelbourne Network’s leadership, the Alliance is being established in partnership with peak industry bodies: AusBiotech, MTPConnect, and Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute Limited (AMTIL), Pathology Technology Australia (PTA), the Association of Healthcare Supply and Procurement Officers (AHSPO), the Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA); and the Industry Capability Network Victoria, with seed funding from the Victorian Government.
The Alliance seeks to create a unified industry voice, and will advocate on behalf of Victorian SME medtech manufacturers across the key issues impacting the sector. This includes addressing procurement issues to increase the proportion of locally-made medtech in the Australian healthcare system – a goal that can be achieved by drawing on the wide variety of high-quality medtech products already on offer from local manufacturers.
“Australia is home to world-class medtech innovators and manufacturers. Increasing awareness of these companies and growing local content in health, will support Australian health services to continue to deliver world-leading care and strengthen our country’s sovereign capabilities.
“The Victorian pilot aims to demonstrate the potential of this ambitious and important solutions-focused Alliance, and work as a stepping stone to empower the national agenda.” – Karen Parr, CEO, BioMelbourne Network
A consortium-backed program supporting sovereign innovation by positioning companies to successfully compete for local health contracts.
The Pathway to Market program is an AMMA initiative, delivered by MTPConnect in partnership with BioMelbourne Network and supported by the Victorian Government.
This program is being piloted in Victoria as a stepping stone to a national initiative. Successful applicants will undergo a capability assessment and attend tailored practical workshops to get prepared to navigate local health markets, understand how to align with hospital procurement needs and structure competitive tender bids.
The comprehensive program also includes an expert-led Masterclass providing deep insights on local procurement pathways and will wrap-up with an Open Day at the Victorian Medtech Showcase in October, where participating companies will have the opportunity to present their products and connect directly with major health service buyers and clinical leaders.
Applicants must be a registered Australian-based for-profit business with operations in Victoria and be producing one or more near-market or market-ready medical device(s) (TRL 7-9).
Further details and applications to join the program are now open on MTPConnect’s website and close on 30 May 2025 at 5:00pm AEST.

The Alliance invites established Victorian medtech companies that are currently manufacturing medtech products and selling locally or globally, and contract manufacturing and development companies to participate.
The Alliance will work with all peak bodies supporting the growth of the sector to build on and add to the work underway to help SMEs expand locally and globally.
