Posted: 21 September 2023

Event: 10 – 12 October 2023

Closes: 30 September 2023

Australia Africa Business Summit organisers Australia Africa Chamber of Commerce (AACC) has welcomed news of the African Union (AU) being permanently admitted as members of the G20. This milestone underscores the growing economic significance and potential of the African continent on the global stage, with G20 membership making the 55-member bloc of African nations only the second regional organization to become a permanent member. The African Union is also the world’s largest free trade area.

The partnership between Australia and Africa has seen consistent growth over the years and the inclusion of the AU into the G20 is a testament to the unity, strength, and potential of African nations.

G20 membership also paves the way for more integrated and beneficial partnerships between Australia, Africa, and other nations, which will be a key feature of next month’s inaugural Australia Africa Business Summit, in Melbourne, Australia.

Through the October 10-12 Summit, the AACC is focused on deepening business ties between Australia and African nations. It is anticipated that the AU’s participation in the G20 will further open doors for meaningful collaborations and mutually beneficial ventures.

“The inclusion of the AU as a permanent member of the G20 is terrific news and G20 will enhance global economic dialogue, fostering a more inclusive and sustainable growth for all members,” said AACC President Duncan Harris.

“Permanent membership is a powerful statement, with the African Union joining the European Union as the only regional organisation members, which will see an increase in trade opportunities for the AU with Australia and the world.”

With a vision to bring Africa to the forefront of the Australian trade and investment focus, the Australia Africa Business Summit 2023 will provide a unique opportunity to access key government representatives and private sector leaders, with the shared aim of building business between Australia and Africa.

Held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, delegates will hear from Keynote speakers including Wamkele Keabetswe Mene, Secretary General, Africa Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat, and Senator the Hon Don Farrell, Minister for Trade & Tourism – just to name a few.
