Posted:  8 July 2025

University of Melbourne researchers have secured $4.4M from Australia’s Economic Accelerator (AEA) Innovate program.

The funding will enable collaboration with industry partners to bring three research-based technologies to market.

The funding had been allocated to projects aiming to create real-world impact in areas such as health diagnostics, rehabilitation devices, environmental sustainability, and industrial processes. Successful initiatives included a micro-device to rapidly detect cancer, a robotic rehabilitation system for stroke recovery, and innovative solutions for autoimmune disease treatment, water purification, and environmental sensing.

Dr Julie Wells, Vice-President (Strategy and Culture) at the University of Melbourne, emphasised the importance of supporting research translation. “This funding is helping our researchers advance technologies that will make a real difference to people’s lives and industries,” she said.

The awarded projects had been assessed on their capacity to solve significant societal and industry challenges while demonstrating clear routes to commercial translation. The funding formed part of the University’s broader strategy to strengthen its innovation ecosystem and enhance research impact.
