BioMelbourne Network thanks Professor Brendan Murphy AC for his outstanding contributions to health and public health in various roles, including Secretary of the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care.

“As Chief Medical Officer, Professor Murphy worked tirelessly with State and Territory Chief Health Officers and experts, and made timely policy decisions to minimise the impact of COVID-19 infections in Australia,” says BioMelbourne Network CEO Jeff Malone.

“Measures such as quarantine and free COVID-19 vaccines and PCR-testing improved accessibility and increased our ability to control the virus, save lives and protect health workers and at-risk populations.

“As a result of Professor Murphy’s science-informed, collaborative public health response, he and his team helped ensure that we had one of the lowest death rates during the pre-vaccination period and one of the highest primary vaccination rates in the world. And now, we have successfully pivoted to a new COVID normal.”

Professor Murphy has also provided dedicated service to the Victorian health and research sectors as a nephrologist; executive at St Vincent’s Health and Austin Health; and board member of Health Workforce Australia, the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute and Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

We wish him all the best in his retirement.
