About the masterclass program
Concept to Creation: The Roadmap to Medtech Manufacturing is a customised program designed to provide early-stage medtech professionals with the knowledge, skills and tools to navigate translation to manufacturing effectively and efficiently for long-term success.This high-value Masterclass Program, led by Invetech and sponsored by the State Government of Victoria, will guide participants through key elements of the manufacturing pipeline. Exploring the pathway through a local and global lens, our leading industry experts will examine:
- Manufacturing lessons for startups
- Designing manufacturing into your product design
- Cultivating a medical device supply chain
- Manufacturing best practices
- Designing manufacturing process and procedures (including the stuff you sometimes forget about!)
- Exclusive live tour of Invetech’s operating ISO13485 manufacturing facility.
Masterclass participants will gain knowledge, skills and tools to strategically advance the development of their product, build confidence pitching to investors and ultimately, succeed in market adoption.

This Masterclass Program has three parts:
- Part A | BioForum: Tuesday 30 May | 7:30am – 10:00am| ACMI, Swinburne Studio, Federation Square, Melbourne (includes 1hr networking breakfast)
- Part B | Masterclass Workshop: Wednesday 31 May | 8:30am – 5:30pm | Invetech Melbourne, 495 Blackburn Road, Mount Waverley, VIC 3149
- Part C | 30-minute Advisory Session: Thursday 1 June and Friday 2 June (individual meeting times to be advised)

Masterclass presenters
Richard Badham, Director, Contract Manufacturing, Invetech
Richard is the Director of Contract Manufacturing at Invetech with responsibility for Diagnostic Product Manufacturing at Invetech’s Melbourne and USA facilities. He has 25 years of experience across design & engineering and manufacturing of complex highly regulated products.
Prior to joining Invetech he held positions of increasing responsibility at Rolls-Royce in the UK leading various design and engineering activities in the Defence Aerospace Gas Turbine group.
Richard joined Invetech in 2012 and his experience covers engineering, supply chain and operations, regulatory compliance EH&S and new product introduction.

Jamila Bird, Program Manager, Invetech
Jamila is a passionate leader, problem solver and champion of continuous improvement.
She has delivered significant business value by leading the:
- Implementation of a new ERP (SAP)
- Development of a Covid PCR diagnostic instrument from alpha prototype to pilot production build within 10 months
- FPY improvement of a recently launched product from 45% to 90%
Jamila has facilitated over 30 continuous improvement events using a variety of business tools.
Andreas Knaack, President, Invetech
As leader of Invetech, Andreas brings more than 20 years of deep experience in guiding product development teams to deliver market winning technologies and products.
Commencing his career with Draeger Medical, Andreas moved into venture capital, supporting and investing in early stage medical technology companies.
Andreas’ relationship with Invetech started in 2004 where he held positions of increasing responsibility including Program Manager and Director of Biomedical Instruments and Devices.
In 2012, Andreas became Global VP Core Histology for Leica Biosystems prior to returning to Invetech for the start of 2016 as President.
Andreas graduated from the University of Applied Sciences, Hamburg Germany.
Travis Ott, Head of Operations, Invetech
Travis is the Head of Operations at Invetech Melbourne with 20 years’ experience in the supply chain across pharmaceutical, medical devices, GMP manufacturing, warehousing and logistics, with a strong continuous improvement background. Experience spans operational management, end to end supply chain, policy development, 3PL & 4PL management, international air freight and sea freight, cold chain, global manufacturing, planning and forecasting.
More recently, he was the ANZ Supply Chain manger at Convatec and led a team covering planning, warehousing and logistics suppling hospitals in both Australia and New Zealand. Core areas of responsibility were international supply chain, forecasting, quality and S&OP processes.
Sarah Phillips, Senior Program Manager, Invetech
Sarah Phillips is a senior program manager in the Diagnostics group with over 20 years’ experience in the diagnostics industry.
Starting her career as a scientist, she progressed into the quality, regulatory and clinical affairs functions for multiple corporate companies.
Her role now integrates this international experience with a strong strategic and disciplined approach to program planning and management.
Sarah holds a BSc with honours in Biomedical Science from the University of the West of England, Bristol.
Sean Pickett, Principal Manufacturing Engineer, Invetech
Sean holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Hons) from the University of Melbourne. He joined Invetech in 2006 and has experience in design and manufacturing of complex electro-mechanical devices.
As a senior member of the DfX Team, Sean is the bridge between the R&D teams and the Contract Manufacturing team, working with project teams on Design for Manufacturing and Assembly as well as planning for the production transfer and scale up of new products. Sean is a 3P and FMEA champion with extensive experience in lean design, transfer to manufacture and manufacturing establishment of regulated medical devices.
Since joining Invetech, Sean has been part of numerous project teams, from medium throughput laboratory instruments to Point of Care Diagnostics systems, helping to transition those products from development to production.
Dr Damian Verdnik, Head of Diagnostics, Invetech
Dr Damian Verdnik is Head of Diagnostics at Invetech in Melbourne. He has been working in scientific and medical device product development for 25 years, starting his career at Axon Instruments
At Axon Damian was product manager for DNA microarray and cell imaging software that used novel image analysis and machine learning techniques, an experience which has led to his ongoing interest in AI and its application to medical diagnostics.
Damian has been at Invetech since 2007. In his current role as Head of Diagnostics Damian leads a large team of consulting engineers, scientists and program managers in Australia and the US who specialise in the design and manufacture of diagnostic instruments, software and medical devices.
Damian has double honours degrees in mathematical physics and philosophy from ANU, and a PhD in philosophy from Monash University.
Mark Wilcock, DfX Resource Group Manager, Invetech
The DfX group is charged with delivering:
- Detailed MCAD designs and drawings
- Enabling manufacturing establishment, and limited-run ISO13485 manufacturing
- In-house rapid prototyping
Mark has been with Invetech for over 20 years. Starting as a MCAD Engineer and progressing through the ranks to manage the group. He has a bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering.
He has working on numerous medical device products from point-of-care, to large laboratory equipment, as well as non-medical projects such as the Australian Synchrotron.
Mark brings a hands-on approach to design, using his experience in many manufacturing processes to guide the DfX and Mechanical group in DFM/DFA.
Dr Oren Zarchin, Vice President, Research & Development, MeMed
Oren is a highly experienced leader of Product Development in global corporations, with more than 20 years of business and academic experience in the medical and semiconductors industries. Oren is currently the Vice President of Research & Development at MeMed, a medical technology company.
In his previous role, Oren served as Vice President, Product Development and executive management at Mazor Robotics LTD. Following Mazor's acquisition by Medtronic PLC, he served as Vice President, Product Development at Medtronic, leading Research & Development and Product Management.
Prior to Medtronic, Oren held various leadership positions at Philips Healthcare where he led multi-disciplinary Research & Development teams and product platforms in the US and Israel.
Oren has a Ph.D. in Physics from the Weizmann Institute of Science, M.Sc. (summa cum laude) in Physics and B.Sc. (cum laude) in Computer Science and Physics from Tel-Aviv University. He holds 15 patents and is the co-author on multiple publications.
