At this event, we will discuss the growing expectations for organisations to adopt environmentally responsible and sustainable practices and the drivers behind these changes. Ross Mahon – Executive Director, Deakin Research Innovations will discuss how Deakin University will spearhead the largest recycling and clean energy advanced manufacturing ecosystem in Australia, due to $50 million in funding from the Federal Government’s inaugural Trailblazer Universities Program. Dr Ewa Douroux – Marketing Director Asia Pacific, Leica Biosystems will share her experiences in bringing in new product lines that transformed a manufacturing facility into an award-winner, and implementing initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of the workplace with significant outcomes. Rick Filonzi – Commercial Manager Automation ANZ, Bio-Strategy will be presenting a new technology released recently for ‘tip’ washing and recycling that reduce waste and carbon footprints providing sustainability benefits for labs.Michael Starkey – Associate Director, Engineering Standards & Design Lead APAC, CSL for the new CSL influenza vaccine facility under construction at Tullamarine will talk about the sustainability design initiatives implemented, their green star rating and how this facility aligns with their commitment to minimise the impact of operations on the environment.

PhD in molecular biology and INSEAD MBA, Dr Ewa Douroux began her corporate career in scientific communication and medical affairs in Paris and since then her career has taken her across the globe to Australia, where she currently resides.
Currently, Ewa is the Asia Pacific Marketing Director at Leica Biosystems, one of the main Global companies in tissue Pathology. Ewa has held positions in Manufacturing, Operations, Environmental Health and Safety and product management. She has been at the inception of new product lines, transformed a manufacturing facility into an award-winner, and led initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of her workplace.
Ewa is passionate about how business can be a force for good, especially in the areas of healthcare, sustainability, diversity and inclusion. In her spare time, Ewa mentors young professionals and is an active contributor to the life of the biotech sector as a member of the Victorian Advisory Group for the Australian MedTech Manufacturing Centre.
Ewa is also the proud recipient of the BioMelbourne Network emerging leadership award in 2020 and the Government of Victoria award for Women in International Business in 2018.

Ross has had a long manufacturing career in Australia and overseas including, senior roles with Deakin Partners, Futuris and Quickstep. Ross will be responsible for positioning Deakin University as a leader in research translation through innovation that: creates impact, develops new products, services and ways of operating for industry, government and, other public and private sector organisations and communities.
In this role, Ross will contribute to the strategy, development and management of the Deakin research innovation eco-system and be responsible for the network of Deakin Futures platforms and programs that enable innovation and translation. Ross will represent Deakin University at the highest level within industry, government and academic networks and partnerships in Australia and internationally,

Rick Filonzi - Commercial Manager Automation ANZ, Bio-Strategy
Rick Filonzi has been in sales, marketing and product management for capital equipment in life sciences throughout ANZ and APAC for 26 years. He has worked for Bio-Strategy for 14 years currently as Commercial Manager Automation and previously as the ANZ Sales and Product Manager Hamilton Robotics. In this role, Rick and his team at Bio-Strategy drive the sales, service and technical support for Hamilton Automated Liquid handlers and Automated storage products and support a new technology released recently for ‘tip’ washing and recycling that reduce waste and carbon footprints providing sustainability benefits.
He has held roles at Biacore in the field of SPR Technology for label free interaction analysis. Rick has also been a research technician in the field of Atherosclerosis, Arthritis and Drug Discovery with 19 publications. He holds Bachelor of Science Hons – Atherosclerosis, University of Melbourne, Department of Medicine.

Michael Starkey - Associate Director, Engineering Standards & Design Lead APAC, CSL
Michael has been providing building services design and consulting for over 20 years, with a heavy focus on the life sciences sector. A mechanical engineer by training, he has a strong track record of leading cross functional teams in successfully delivering complex projects. He understands the challenges and opportunities of implementing sustainability initiatives in pharmaceutical and research facilities.
Michael last year joined one of his clients, CSL, as Engineering Standards and Design Lead, responsible for oversight of engineering capital investments across the CSL APAC network. Michael is functioning as the Design Lead for the CSL Seqirus Banksia program, where his collaborative approach and passion for sustainability have been the impetus for a facility blueprint aligned with CSL's pivot towards a more sustainable future.
