3D printing enables the creation of medical implants and surgical tools customised to fit in a patient’s body or surgeon’s hand, rapid prototyping of devices for use in clinical trials, and creation of orthopaedic and dental implants with complex designs. The global market for 3D printed medical devices is predicted to reach USD 2 billion by 2020 (MarketsandMarkets 2015).
In this event, Professor Xinhua Wu will talk about Monash Engineering’s capabilities in 3D printing and the advantages of using this technology in biomedical implants, surgical tools and guides. Professor Wu will present examples of her research centre’s work in prototyping and manufacturing complex components, designed in collaboration with leading surgeons. Dr Elizabeth Sigston from Monash Health will talk about the development of 3D printed components in reconstructive surgery. Dr Arthur Brandwood will outline a regulatory perspective of this technology.

The Monash Institute of Medical Engineering (MIME) harnesses the power of new technologies to transform patient care and find new cures and treatments. As Australia’s leading university in biomedical engineering and medical technology, Monash University established MIME to accelerate the development, testing, commercialisation and adoption of new medical devices, diagnostics, therapeutics, delivery systems and clinical tools.
MIME brings multidisciplinary teams together across Monash University’s faculties, partner hospitals and collaborating medical research institutions. The institute integrates capabilities in engineering, IT, biomedical technologies and preclinical and clinical research to improve healthcare outcomes.
The institute MIME’s team of over 100 researchers and clinicians are pioneering research in areas such as bionic vision, magnetic brain stimulation, 4D imaging technology, biodegradable immunotherapeutic nanoparticles, biofilm prevention and the characterisation of atherosclerotic plaques. Speaker Bios
Gladly introducing the Guest Speakers:
Prof Xinhua Wu
Director, Monash Centre for Additive Manufacturing
Professor Wu is the founder Director of the Monash Centre for Additive Manufacturing and Director of the ARC Research Hub for Transforming Australia's Manufacturing Industry through High Value Additive Manufacturing. She is a world-leading expert in titanium alloys and in advanced powder processing, in particular 3D printing of metals. Professor Wu has already used 3D printing to create a small jet engine and is extending her research to producing 3D printed, made-to-measure surgical instruments and bio-medical implants. The Monash Centre for Additive Manufacturing (MCAM), based in Clayton, has access to a range of experts in materials science, surface engineering, and alloy design and processing. MCAM uses two methods of additive manufacturing: powder-bed selective laser sintering and blown-powder laser-melting to print a product directly from computer-aided design (CAD) files. MCAM welcomes discussions with businesses regarding commercial production and research.
Dr Elizabeth Sigston
Monash Health and Monash University
Dr Elizabeth Sigston is a surgeon in Otorhinolyngology, Head & Neck Surgery (ORLHNS). She has over 13 years’ experience in head and neck cancer surgery, including two years at HEGP in Paris, and more than 10 years in the Department of ORLHNS at Monash Health. Elizabeth is on the ASOHNS Training Board and is an adjunct lecturer in Monash University’s Department of Surgery.
Elizabeth is also a business entrepreneur. She is the Founder and CEO of SavinGreen, a Certified B- Corporation. SavinGreen provides everyday services and uses the power of consumer choice to create environmental benefit. SavinGreen has contributed to the planting of over 50,000 trees. Dr Sigston was a finalist in the 2015 Victoria Telstra Business Women of the Year Awards.
Dr Sigston is completing a PhD in head and neck cancer through Monash University. She is co-investigator for other research projects including a research project that was the recipient of seed funding for investigating 3-D printed materials in bony reconstruction in head and neck cancer patients.
Dr Arthur Brandwood
Brandwood Biomedical
Dr Brandwood is a biologist and materials engineer with more than 30 years’ experience in the medical devices industry. Arthur is past Chair of both the National Advisory Board and the Regulatory Expert Panel for the Australian industry association AusMedtech and is Adviser to the Asian Harmonisation Working Party, where he currently leads a working group on Combination Products. Arthur leads the Australian technical delegation to ISO for development of the ISO 10993 biocompatibility standards. He holds a visiting professorship at the University of Sydney School of Engineering where he teaches regulatory affairs. Arthur previously served at the Therapeutic Goods Administration as Director of Devices Registration and Assessment and Director of Biomaterials and Engineering laboratories.
