Speakers:
Peter is an experienced public company senior manager with deep knowledge and expertise in marketing and technology development. Since joining Cann Group in May 2016, Peter has reset the business plan as directed by the board and led the company through a successful initial public offering (IPO) to list on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), raising $13.5 million while bringing outstanding institutional and cornerstone investor support. This was followed by a subsequent $70m+ capital raising within the same year to accelerate the company’s expansion program.
Peter has also guided the company to a position at the forefront of Australia’s developing medicinal cannabis industry, it being the first company to receive the necessary licences and permits from the Office of Drug Control as well as producing Australia’s first commercial medicinal cannabis.
In a 28-year career at Nufarm (ASX:NUF) prior to joining Cann, Peter held senior management roles in marketing, business development, and information technology, heading up the group’s new technologies division which involved the licensing and commercial development of several new agribusiness technologies. He has project managed the successful integration of newly acquired businesses and has extensive experience working with regulators in Australia and overseas.
Dr Amanda Gillon, BioScience Managers, Investment Manager
Amanda is an Investment Manager with BioScience Managers. With 5 years’ of life science specific investment experience she performs portfolio management, deal origination, prospective investment company due diligence and deal negotiation.
Prior to this role, Amanda’s research experience included a post-doctoral fellowship in protein trafficking disorders at Columbia University in New York, USA. She holds a PhD in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from La Trobe University in Melbourne and an MBA from Melbourne Business School.

Sonia Gowan, Associate Director Marketing, Asia Pacific Japan, Illumina
Sonia has over 20 years’ experience in life sciences both in the laboratory and in sales and marketing. She has worked for companies in New Zealand, United Kingdom, Singapore and Australia. Having held an Asia Pacific role for the past 10 years, Sonia is experienced in diverse market environments including different cultural, regulatory and market accessibility.
Sonia leads the Illumina marketing team and is working to ensure that genomic applications are widely understood and adopted. Today, Illumina is a global leader in genomics. We now have the ability to sequence at an unprecedented scale. While the rate of progress is accelerating exponentially, we are only just beginning to understand the clinical significance of the genome. These advances will trigger a fundamental shift in healthcare and beyond.
Mark Williams Phillips Ormonde Fitzpatrick – Senior Associate
Mark’s academic background is in computer science and electrical engineering. He assists clients in obtaining and enforcing their intellectual property rights in the areas of software, electronics and engineering. Prior to joining Phillips Ormonde Fitzpatrick, Mark worked with a major Australian car manufacturer within their Current and Past Model Engineering group.
Mark has 15 years’ experience in patent practice in Australia. His professional practice focuses on drafting and prosecuting patent applications both in Australia and overseas. Mark focuses on a diverse range of inventions, including electronic devices, mining and mining hardware, software, computer implemented inventions and electronic gaming machine systems. Mark also assists clients in obtaining trade mark protection.
