The Opportunity:

CSL is hiring a Senior Scientist, Antibody Discovery and Protein Engineering to join the Research Organisation at Bio21 Institute. As a senior member of the team, you will provide state-of-the-art scientific expertise in the specialist area of antibody discovery and protein engineering, relating to the development of therapeutic protein drug candidates.

Working closely with the Director, Head of Antibody Discovery & Protein Engineering and colleagues as appropriate, you will set project objectives, determine and implement scientific and technical strategy and take a lead role in developing and executing continuous improvements in CSL’s antibody and protein engineering platforms. As a senior member of the team, you will work with and supervise direct reports in order to achieve specified research project objectives within defined time and quality parameters.

Working in collaboration with the Director, Head of Antibody Discovery & Protein Engineering, colleagues and external collaborators, you will lead and manage the technology transfer of CSL’s antibody discovery capabilities to external collaborators, as and when necessary. In consultation with Director, Head of Antibody Discovery & Protein Engineering, you will also play a lead role in the strategic outsourcing of project activities, by establishing, building, maintaining and managing a range of external relationships.

Key Skills & Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert scientific and proven technical experience with state-of-the-art therapeutic antibody and protein discovery platforms (e.g. phage, yeast, ribosome or mammalian display)
  • Maintain broad, high-level awareness of key scientific/technical strategies and innovative technological developments in therapeutic protein engineering, including all major in vitro and in vivo antibody discovery platforms
  • Investigate and solve complex conceptual problems, applying well-developed research skills in respect of specialist area
  • Initiate, design and manage the discovery of new therapeutic proteins
  • Assist in the development of novel computational approaches for the engineering of therapeutic proteins
  • Contribute to establishment and maintenance of research resources on-site
  • Assess and interpret research needs in accordance with scope of individual projects
  • Provide professional capacity and credibility to lead significant programs/projects
  • Work to develop overall competency of program/project team members, actively facilitating learning and development opportunities
  • Contribute to an environment that fosters innovation and calculated risk-taking by the program/project team members
  • Plan and coordinate programs/projects in alignment with CSL Research Group objectives
  • Maintain and build CSL’s research profile within academic and industry networks

Essential Qualifications/Experience:

  • PhD degree or equivalent with a minimum of 5 years of experience in relevant industry and/or academic environments

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Attributes:

  • Relevant, proven expertise in therapeutic protein engineering within industrial and/or academic environments
  • Record of scientific excellence demonstrated by scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations and/or patent inventorship
  • Proven skills in recombinant therapeutic antibody generation and engineering techniques (e.g. isolation and affinity maturation of antibodies using phage, yeast or mammalian display technologies)
  • A track record of progressing therapeutic proteins to publication and/or patent disclosure
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to influence, motivate and inspire team members
