Research Australia’s Global Landscape Analysis of Childhood Dementia Research

Posted: 10 August 2022

Research Australia is pleased to partner with the Childhood Dementia Initiative to report on global childhood dementia clinical research: Childhood Dementia Global Landscape Analysis.

Research Australia’s report identifies high value-research investment opportunities and emerging therapies globally, that are vital to diagnosing, treating and hopefully, one day, curing childhood dementia.

The Childhood Dementia Initiative have identified the need for systematic change in how research into childhood dementia is undertaken and funded. In particular there is a need for a global vision to drive research and advocacy to urgently disrupt the impact of childhood dementia on children and families across the world. Drawing on Research Australia’s expertise in the entire health and medical research pipeline, our report identifies the research that can support this global vision.

Key findings:

  • Australia ranks 5th in the world for childhood dementia clinical trials, when analysed per million people. Although Australia ranks well, there is still a limited number of childhood dementia trials currently active in Australia.
  • The vast majority of clinical trials conducted across the 70+ childhood dementia disorders are Phase 1 and/or Phase 2.
  • For those areas where there is research in a particular disorder, there is usually a wide range of different intervention types (i.e. a combination of gene therapies, small molecule drug, biologicals, stem cell therapies, dietary supplements, etc) under investigation.
