The opportunity

CSL is currently implementing a Therapeutic Area (TA) model to support development of strategy and continued innovation. Strengthening focus on our defined TAs will be important in helping us to manage growth and our in-market and R&D portfolio going forward. As a result of the new TA model, we are seeking to appoint a Senior Director, Research, Respiratory. In this key leadership role within CSL Global Research, this position will contribute to the development and implementation of TA strategy, with a focus on the TA Research strategy and project portfolio.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Provide expert scientific leadership and advice to Respiratory TA core leadership team
  • Work with Research Senior leadership to develop and implement Research Strategy for TA and  ensure project planning and execution is aligned with TA Priorities
  • Contribute to project prioritization of relevant TA projects within the Research portfolio
  • Ensure scientific excellence & awareness of key scientific & technical developments relevant to TA
  • Provide input into TA relevant business development strategy & due diligence activities
  • Co-ordinate Research input into due diligence process (working with Director Research Innovation and Director Research NPO)
  • Build external scientific and industry networks relevant to TA (working with relevant Research Senior leadership)
  • Liaise with key internal functions regarding communication of Research outcomes with TA team.

As a senior leader within the CSL Research function, this role provides expert scientific input into Research activities within other CSL TA’s as appropriate (e.g. Research project portfolio development and implementation, due diligence processes)


  • PhD in a discipline relevant to respiratory


  • Significant academic and/or industry experience relevant to Respiratory
  • Track record in the development and conduct of high-quality research activity relevant to Respiratory
  • Significant experience in translation of research outcomes into early clinical development
  • Clear evidence of capacity to work effectively in team environment and matrix leadership skill
  • Strong overall strategic mindset
  • Capacity to collaborate internally and with external academic and industry colleagues.

Travel requirements

  • Domestic and international travel to interact with internal CSL and external colleagues and collaborators, and to attend relevant scientific meetings as appropriate.
