The BioMelbourne Network

About Us

The BioMelbourne Network is the peak industry forum for the leaders of the Victorian biotechnology industry.

History

The BioMelbourne Network was established in February 2001 by the Committee for Melbourne, following a report from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on the Victorian Biotechnology industry.  BCG found that although Victoria hosted a well developed research and development base, an important expertise gap was present threatening the maximization of ongoing international commercial opportunities.

The Committee for Melbourne and the newly formed BioMelbourne Network was successful in securing a three year establishment grant from the State Government of Victoria in late 2002.  This grant provided the critical funding to launch the BioMelbourne Network as an independent industry lead membership organisations.

On the 1st July, 2003, the BioMelbourne Network was established as an Incorporated Association and began recruiting members.

The BioMelbourne Network today

Today, the BioMelbourne Network has a membership that is representative of the broad Victorian biotechnology and research sector.  The Network provides a critical link for the biotechnology and research community fostering strong links between companies, research organisations, financial markets and government, encouraging an environment for greater collaboration and providing a consistent platform for information sharing and gathering to support the further development of the sector.

Our definition of the term ‘biotechnology’ is rapidly expanding from a medically-oriented or agricultural context.  The emergence of new technologies that utilise a biotechnology or more simply, a biology related base, are appearing on the horizon redefining organisations away from traditional biotechnology classifications.  These new companies are in the business of water recycling, environment and climate change, manufacturing as well as advanced food production.

As well as the central role that BioMelbourne Network plays in connecting and advocating on behalf of the sector, the Network is focused on identifying and broadening the current membership to encompass these new emerging organisations and in turn, redefine the term biotechnology.

Progressing Victoria’s BioIndustry

As a membership based Industry Development and Promotions Agency for the Victorian biotechnology industry, the BioMelbourne Network focusses on connecting Biotechnology, Business and Government while promoting the capabilities of the Victorian industry on a global basis.

The BioMelbourne Network plays a specific role as a facilitator, influencer and direction setter by drawing upon the collective leadership interests of the sector to achieve significant results for the industry as a whole.

Membership in BioMelbourne Network ensures your organisation will have influential input into the industry’s direction and development, plus the opportunity to gain credible connections within the local and global biotech value chain.
