Austin Health ID to join the Doherty Institute

18 March 2019 |

Announcement from Professor Sharon Lewin, Director, Doherty Insititute:

I am thrilled to announce that Austin Health’s Infectious Diseases Department (Austin Health ID) is joining the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute) as the first unit of the Institute located externally.

Austin Health ID has an outstanding track record in clinical service, teaching, research and public health policy in infectious diseases; members of the Department are world leaders in antimicrobial resistance and stewardship, hand hygiene, Buruli ulcer, drug allergy and infection control. We look forward to working together in these and other areas.

This partnership further strengthens and solidifies existing collaborations between Austin Health ID and units within the Doherty Institute in areas such as the translation of genomics into clinical practice and clinical infection control interventions, and provides new opportunities for clinical trials in infectious diseases.

Increased links with key clinical departments within the University of Melbourne’s affiliated hospitals such as Austin Health ID, will unify and enhance our research capacity across a spectrum of basic to clinical research in infection and immunity.

As Austin Health ID is joining the Institute through the University of Melbourne’s Department of Medicine (Austin Health), the Institute remains a joint venture between the University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
